The (really effective) Ban on French Fries Continues...

ever since i heard about this silly ban i thought it was only some right-wing nut's wet dream and only that. but then i saw jay leno telling jokes about the french. i mean, i know you gotta jump on the bandwagon, but jeez, choose your bandwagons, will ya (and i'm not only talking about leno here)? you're actually telling me you wanna make jokes about a country that's actively promoting a peaceful resolution to washington's chickenshit little war?

anyway.
so, when's the ban on american goods starting? 'cause i hear that the war's only two weeks away and i wanna get a head start.

But It Doesn't Matter When; It May Rain Or It May Shine

day off. yay.
since saturday, i've only worked monday night. so four days off in the span of five days. pretty good, uh? and i woke up today wondering if i was working tonight. but no, i'm not. that's a great feeling 'cause, usually, days off just evaporate. but today feels like an extra day off for some reason. that's an incredible feeling.

my roommate's right in the middle of her exam week. she's been studying every fucking day for the past four days. and has been a bit on edge because of it. she warned me in advance, which was cool because she's (now) aware of it. so i can make fun of her when she gets neurotic and lashes out at me because she's stressed out. but the week hasn't been that bad, really (if you don't count the fact that i can't watch a movie at a normal volume level without her complaining about it - so i'm only watching movies in the afternoon when she's at work). i've been able to make her laugh at her behavior a lot (which, if you know her when she's stressed out, is no small feat) and things have been rather light around here.

oh, i've also started reading again. see, i have a lot of books. but i can only read in short bursts. so if i stop reading for a day or two, forget it. you won't see me reading for another two or three months. but the other week i went through this box of old books (most of them still unread) and found henry miller's sexus. so i started reading it in bed last weekend... and i fucking loved it! it's this shitbrick of a book but i fell for it right away! i couldn't believe it. i love the way he wrote it. anyway, so now i'm reading it in bed every night before i go to sleep.

and last night i also found a way to rearrange my bedroom. i've changed it around a couple of times since moving in last july but it still looks like someone's crashing in the room and not living in it. i mean, i've cleaned it up a bit last fall but it still doesn't look like a proper bedroom. and i still feel weird in it. but last night i found a new plan. and i may do that today.

and i'll also rent spy kids 2: the island of lost dreams and watch it this afternoon. i never saw the first one because i was waiting for the special edition. hmm. i was thinking of renting the two together, but i won't have enough time to watch them both before the roommate comes back from work tonight. and then there are the extras. shit. i think i'll just rent the second one today.

Someone tried to kill his daddy. So now he wants to kill someone else's daddy.

...and it all looks like the same fucking criminal mindset to me.

but what he really wants to do is to liberate the iraqi people.

(do people even have an ounce of trust or compassion left for these guys?
bush&co: we want the whole fuckin' playground.)

blogging for blogging's sake

today's my last day of work for the week. cannot wait to get to the end of my shift and enjoy my free time.

last night's will & grace was actually way better than the last couple of weeks have been (although the editing in the beginning between the various storylines confused me; it looked like some kind of weird throwaway best-of comp. jack's line about grace finding barry hot now making barry officially gay was hilarious.

even friends wasn't so bad (after the horrible run i've been made to endure since the start of the year). although, joey lying about why monica wanted the money was lame and incrediblythree's company-esque and drawn out. (but what's this about putting up old boring re-runs instead of freshly original (and way funnier) scrubs episodes this past month??? do the nbc execs really think we wanna watch old re-runs during sweeps month? someone should be shot in the leg for this.)

on the war front, there's not much war blogging worth mentioning this week (aside from bush & co. falling down harder than they've had in weeks. yay). mid-march is looking like the time bush wants the end of the civilized world to start. good for him. someone give him a cookie, will ya?

so, it looks like i don't have much to say today, uh? oh well.
ooh, while i'm here - rent one hour photo. i don't really feel like going into it in detail but it's definitely worth at least one rental. the cinematography just looks stunning on dvd and the disc is packed with quality extras (and great menu design too. finally someone gets it). a great first film for mark romanek.

joe millionaire - the aftermath

yeah. we're gonna be treated to the necessary one-week-later round-up; because, you know, we care (although, i never even thought about evan and the (spoiler-free) girl of his dreams not meeting up again until now).

but the show wasn't that bad, actually (unless you joined in for the pre-requisite women of joe millionaire fluff hour that preceded the actual show; which only served in making us wait for evan's decision). but evan made the right choice (for those of you keeping count) and the actual final twist that paul was promoting every five minutes since last week managed to avoid banality (i'd say about 75% of the members of the joe message board had about thought that one) by bringing us real emotion. and who knew evan could actually express some real hard-earned emotion? not me. but it was incredibly touching. the highlight of the show, for sure. not the surprise, but the reaction.

that's it.
now who'll be watching who wants to marry my mom and married by america next month?
lol.
someone's bringing us down.

Posted by Anonymous | 11:57 AM |

February 17, 2003

joe millionaire.

yeah, so what started out as a semi-promising show (as much as you can make 'ha - come laugh at girls who wanna marry the money' sound unpathetic anyway) turned out to be just a boring sell-out after only a few episodes, thanks to one seriously bland guy and an extraordinarily shoddy editing job (someone should really get fired for this). the editing is what makes me feel like i've been manipulated. we'll see tonight. and if the final twist is targeted towards us, the audience, fox will have some real explaining to do. a joke is funny if we trust the guy telling it; even if it's on us. but i don't trust this show right now. fox may well have thought itself way too smart for its own good. the final episode airs tonight (or so fox says). i will be taping.
i really hope the joke's not on us or else fox will have a hard time getting its audience back (although, to be fair, fox has never been a pulitzer prize-winning network (none of the major ones are nowadays).

like shooting ari fleischers in a barrel

watched bits of the ari fleischer post-u.n. report press conference on cnn.
i caught it when he was answering questions by reporters. is it just me or are the reporters challenging the bush administration more now? this reporter (who i only know as terry, i think) asked fleischer if, now that iraq has accounted for i think 280 prescribed (is this even the right word?) missiles, the u.s. would now ask them to destroy them. ari would not answer him right out. that was weird. and then the reporter asked him again. and again. and ari would only try to squirm his way by talking about other points besides the destruction of said missiles. that was funny to see.

i would just hope that some u.n officials would come right out and challenge the bush administration on what their motives - disarmament or right out invasion. they are two very different issues and the u.s. is looking like fools trying to get a war going before the inspectors are even done with their work. this is the u.n., not the iraq defense system. the u.n. was put in place precisely for these kinds of problem.
and iraq doesn't even seem to be present a clear and present danger to the u.s. right now. so why the rush and outright lies to get iraq? i would just wish someone would put them on the spot for it instead of the u.n. having to justify their inspection process every couple of weeks.
the bush administration is not the world police, but they sure do act like it.

ps. is anyone in the u.n. taking notes on all the illegal actions the u.s. is taking and willing to take if they attack another country without the u.n. backing? i hope they are.
sheesh, it sure seems like bush doesn't know what's waiting for him if he does go with a unilateral strike against another country. everything that his administration has been saying about saddam hussein will be applicable to his administration. and then the u.n. will have to ask the u.s. to disarm their weapons of mass destruction. and then we'll go through that circus all over again.

tunnel vision is fun, isn't it? (bully tunnel vision, even more so)

if you see her, say hello

well, i spent most of the day watching cnn (idiotic bush warmongering speech) and looking up war blogs on the net to see what was new and what people had to say.
i also watched last tuesday's 24 episode. wow. not saying anything other than at one point i had my hand over my opened mouth and had this shocked expression on my face for a good ten seconds.
and then i took the car out just so it doesn't freeze up tomorrow when i leave for work 'cause it's been freezing for the past two days.

the genie awards were tonight (the canadian film awards). i only found this out around 5 pm. only watched bits of the show 'cause i was busy watching the montreal canadiens unable to bring their game up against the poor columbus blue jackets. a 2-1 loss in overtime is all they were able to muster.

i just saw a quick recap of the genies and here are the coolest wins:
atom egoyan's ararat won for best film and best actress.
and i'm also very happy to report that david cronenberg won for best directing for spider. can't wait to see that film.

as the hockey game was coming to a close a friend of mine called me up. she was going to bed, exhausted from lack of sleep and having loads of homework to do (she just started college again after a couple of years off and has been feeling quite stressed out these past couple of weeks). little explanation about this friend: we spent the entire summer together two years ago. we had fun. lots of fun. but she wasn't ready for a relationship, blah blah blah, and so we 'broke up'. but we stayed friends and our friendship evolved over months and now we're really good friends. we still have that flirty sexual energy going on but we don't do anything about it because a) she has a boyfriend now, and b) i don't wanna get my heart broken again like that. but everything's nice and fun and pretty open between us. we talk every other day or so. but the phone call was especially nice because we were both just tired and without any trace of pretense whatsoever. the walls were down. it was just a nice quiet talk with a good friend.
(what the fuck am i telling all this for?? lol. i thought i could write this down with way fewer words than this. lol)

i'm listening to dylan's blood on the tracks. i bought it last fall when i was on my dylan discovery binge but never did get too much into it. i guess i was put off by it, by the style of the songs. that wasn't my idea of what dylan was, even if i'd heard lots of his songs before. i thought it would more miserable for some reason, and i'd enjoy that. but now this time it's going down well. i'm not expecting anything out of it, i guess.

on this, i bid you a fine farewell and wish you all nice dreams.

oh, and i was also looking for a book (martin luther king, jr's why we can't wait) that i'd put in one of my can-put-it-away-to-save-space book boxes and ended up taking out two other old and unread books that i thought i'd enjoy reading: henry miller's sexus and edgar allan poe's tales of mystery.

a deceptively simple and mundane blog - where is raed? (thanks to fimoculous). oh, btw, this one's an iraqi blog. yeah. a look from the inside. finally.
helps put a face on those 'likely humanitarian scenarios' the bush administration is not thinking twice about in its addiction to power and oil.

great - bbc news: us denies afghan civilian deaths
it's great to see the bush administration is not acting like the mob - abcnews: us offers turkey aid for cooperation (thanks to daily kos).
'aid'?? why are they helping them now, uh?
and 15 billion? sheesh, they want their war badly, don't they?

Posted by Anonymous | 11:37 AM |

good morning.

if you're like me and are opposed to any illegal war/invasion, please take two minutes out of your day to send this greenpeace letter to the presidents of france, russia, and china, thanking them for their stand against such a vicious and imperialistic war.

thank you.

i can't believe what i just witnessed: donald rumsfeld actually just declared [ live on cnn ] that saddam hussein and his regime were 'accomplished liars' and lied 'every day'. and this was a really bad thing, mind you; he wasn't to be trusted, you know. lol. fucker. i couldn't believe it.
was he squirming when he said that or was it just me? i mean, come on, the bush administration has been lying to its own people and has kept extremely vital information from them and has been scaring them to death every two weeks with their orange alert system just so they can go ahead and get their fucking war on; now rumsfeld has the audacity to call saddam's regime 'accomplished liars' and this is why we shouldn't listen to him? wake up, rummy.

and i was glad to see some reporters actually asking about the two incredibly different versions of the osama tapes.
ha. fuck them and their lies.
do you hear those fires burning now, mr bush?

full frontal - steven soderbergh, 2002
i just finished watching it this morning. and i gotta say that i liked the second half better than the first. i don't know what made it this way, maybe i was just in a better movie-watching mood this morning. anyway. this, obviously, is an experiment in filmmaking. so you should only watch it if you're in for a good steven soderbergh intellectual fuck. the characters and situations are cold and steely, as usual. but there is also something meatier for those of you who'll stick it out. definitely. and i can say that i was pleasantly surprised by the film. it's not exceptional by any means, other people have done this kind of film, but this is a cool way to spend 100 minutes of your life.
and i feel that catherine keener would have been in the running for a supporting actress nod for this.
i didn't get everything about the film but i enjoy this kind of filmmaking.
and if you're up for a soderbergh mindstroke, go for it.
* ooh, and a brilliantly genius nicky katt as hitler. a delicious standout performance of the film. in any film.
light years away from anything i've ever seen him do and he just pops off the screen every time he's on.

Posted by Anonymous | 12:09 PM |

the commies are coming!
what do you think the chances are that the bush administration thought they wouldn't get caught flubbing their way through two back-to-back audio tape messages and try to get the tapes to be pro-war before the real translations came out (only three hours later, mind you)? think this would only happen in poorly-written sitcoms? yeah. me too...

good morning all.
now i'm getting things done. i actually managed to reconfigure this little page a bit more. with almost no html clue as to how to go about doing it, thankyouverymuch.

next thing i wanna do is to change the lefthand box so i can put some links, music rotations, etc to start giving this blog a little personality.

Posted by Anonymous | 10:32 AM |

ah, done.
no more insignificant words written up on this fine fine blog of a blog (apart from the scrunched-up date on the right now...). yay.

Posted by Anonymous | 2:17 AM |

so tonight that might see...
well, this works fairly well. now if only i could find a way to get rid of that 'wednesday' on the right-hand side of the screen...

tonight i started watching full frontal. a nice enough experiment. it's nothing extremely exceptional but i'm glad i get to watch it in the comfort of my own couch. i'll finish it tomorrow morning.

this (blogging) is supposed to be egocentric, right? good.
